Romantic Rachmaninoff
Thursday, February 14 — Saturday, February 16, 8:00 pm

Thomas Wilkins, conductor
Howard Shelley, piano

Bernstein: Candide Suite
Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Dvorák - Symphony No. 8

The centerpiece of our February Masterworks performance is Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto-like work, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, which features a set of 24 variations on the last of Niccolò Paganini's Caprices for solo violin. Making his Philharmonic debut this month, Thomas Wilkins leads the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra with pianist Howard Shelley as soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody. Wonderful symphonic “book ends” to the Rachmaninoff work include, first, the Candide Suite, one of Leonard Bernstein’s most famous compositions (composed for the operetta by the same name), and by Dvorák’s charming, folk music-inspired Symphony No. 8 in G major.
