Acclaimed pianist André Watts is soloist and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos conductor in a program that includes Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Brahms Symphony No. 1 and Wachet auf from Cantata No. 140 by Bach/Stokowski.
Renowned for its distinctive sound and admired for an unrivaled legacy of "firsts" in music-making, The Philadelphia Orchestra remains one of the preeminent orchestras in the world. The eminent Spanish conductor emeritus of the National Orchestra of Spain, Rafael Frühbeck De Burgos, who has enjoyed a long artistic relationship with the Orchestra, will lead the ensemble as guest conductor for its Phil engagement.
The program features the internationally acclaimed American pianist André Watts, who has a long history of music making with The Philadelphia Orchestra, beginning with his official debut with the Orchestra at age 14. More than 45 years later, André Watts remains one of today's most celebrated and beloved artists. He received the coveted Avery Fisher Prize in 1988 and a National Medal of Arts in 2011, given by the President of the United States. Watts will demonstrate his remarkable artistry with a performance of Grieg’s sublime piano concerto.
