Mann’s Interpretation
DAVID MANN is well known to patrons of the Phil from the Collector’s Corner gallery, where he has worked for 17 years. Following his undergraduate studies at DePauw, Mann pursued graduate studies in Art History at Michigan State and received a Master's Degree from the University of Iowa.
February 12: The Fenellosa-Dow Theory of Art
Ernest Fenellosa was an influential Harvard-trained scholar teaching in Japan who, with his assistant Arthur Wesley Dow, emphasized “notan,” or progressive brushwork and spacing in art. Fenellosa was one of the first critics to recognize the role of empty space in composition. Study Dow’s book Composition, with illustrations by one of Dow’s students, Georgia O’Keeffe.
